Jesa - korean ancestor rituals

Image
Jesa functions as a  memorial  to the ancestors  on the day of the ancestor's death every year. In my family we have several times Jesa for my grand parents and grand-grand-parents.  In the early 20 century my grand-grand-father had 2 grand mothers therefore we have totally 5 times ceremony to memorize the ancestors.  To prepare the meals for Jesa, my mom and my wife give their effort with family members.  We offer food, fruits, and wine, and finally make bows in front of the grand-parents spirit, all together.

JJimJilBang-Korean public sauna

Image
JJimjingbang is more likely Sauna. But it's unique culture in Korea.  Wiki says "A jjimjilbang (Korean pronunciation: [t͈ɕimdʑilbaŋ]; Hangul: 찜질방; Hanja: 찜질房; MR: tchimjilbang) is a large, gender-segregated public bathhouse in Korea, furnished with hot tubs, showers, Korean traditional kiln saunas and massage tables. Jjimjil is derived from the words meaning heating" If you read until now, it sounds like a public spa, but spa is the only place. The main place is sauna in clothes, non-sleeve shirt and short-pants for sauna. It's a place to hang-out with friends, family inside large place with lots of sauna rooms.  My wife and I enjoy sauna-room and sons enjoy their own play in play room. Time to time we get there to spend time with healthy sweat. it's called salt room. there are salt rocks on the wall.  it's an amethyst room.  it's called igloo room. Hot and cold My second son's favorite play ground. He met his friend here. m

Fish shaped burn Bungeppang

Image
Have u ever heard Bungeppang? Ppang is burn or bread in Korean. It's exactly same shape with a fish. If you search Bungeppang then it says bean-jam burn in the shape of a carp. In side the burn you can taste bin-jam or custard cream. My son likes to have custard cream burn and I like the opposite one. It's really easy to find the places selling Bungeppang in winter season on the street.

Nowadays, we can get vegetables at any time thanking to science but in the ancient time, we could get vegetables only in the harvest season. Therefore, after harvesting vegetables, it was very important to make Kimchi for the winter. Not only for winter but also for next year. Still Kimjang is our life. My family's yearly job it is. My parents and my own family get together in this season for Kimjang. This weekend was the day.

Last night strong wind and rain left only persimmons on branches. Leaves were all gone on the ground. As a steet trees, persimmon tree looks weird. If someone gets hit by it, who would be responsible for the accident?

Korean and japanese fast-food restaurant

Image
Lotteria is a Korean fast-food restaurant and it's in japan, too. Because Lotte is an enterprise company running their business in both country. My japanese friends told me the brand is not a delicious hamburger but in korea this is a really popular brand. Maybe the korean one is more customized to korean taste.

Korean late fall on the street

I suddenly realized that the autumn is passing. Korea's 70% of territory is mountain, therefore it's easy to get to any mountain if you want to get there. As a city person and worker of a company, it's not easy to enjoy the mountain. Maybe it's just my excuse. But the street trees are also wonderful to fill the autumn surrounding me.    Red, brown, yellow and still green ones gave me inspiration to write this blog to say good bye for my 42nd autumn
